Full Moon Resort
Music Masters Camps
Big Indian, NY
Camping with Animals will take place at Full Moon Resort in the heart of the Catskill Mountains from Wednesday, January 2 to Sunday, January 6, 2013.
Invitation from Tosin Abasi:
As a musician I've benefited the most from demonstration. I hope to create an environment for other aspiring musicians to do the same. Myself and the instructors involved will be at your disposal to provide an opportunity for growth and inspiration. I believe that this is truly a unique group of players with highly individual approaches to their instruments together in one place at one time.
The curriculum concepts for this camp include a guitar tour, soloing/lead guitar techniques and writing,
an axe effects class, performing and setting up a show on a visual and production level, watching an actual rehearsal of Animals As Leaders, plus classes with special guest instructor, Evan Brewer.
See CampingWithAnimals.com/schedule for full details.
About The Instructors
When Tosin Abasi released his debut solo album under the moniker ANIMALS AS LEADERS in 2009, few would have predicted the band's meteoric rise over the next two years. Although Abasi earned acclaim as the lead guitarist in the Washington, D.C.-based metalcore act Reflux, it was still a long-shot that an instrumental album of progressive metal with jazz, electronic and ambient flourishes would develop anything more than a cult following.
Fast-forward two-plus years to "Weightless," the group's sophomore effort, and ANIMALS AS LEADERS is revered worldwide as a trailblazing pioneer of modern heavy music. The group's genre-defying compositions have earned extensive praise - Steve Vai called the band "the future of creative, heavy virtuoso guitar playing," and MetalSucks recently ranked Abasi #2 on their list of modern metal's top guitarists - and the diversity of their music has enabled them to tour with a wide variety of acts, including Deftones, Underoath, Circa Survive, BTBAM, The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Faceless, Thursday, Dredg and, on the 2010 Summer Slaughter tour, even Decapitated.
Whereas the group's self-titled debut was a collaboration between Abasi and Periphery's Misha Mansoor, "Weightless" features the recording debut of ANIMALS AS LEADERS, the true band - that is, Abasi (guitars), Javier Reyes (guitars) and Navene Koperweis (drums). After nearly two years of touring together, the trio wrote and recorded "Weightless" together in mid-2011, with Koperweis producing and Reyes mixing. The group debuted a new track, "Isolated Incidents," during their inaugural headlining tour this summer, which included sellout shows from coast-to-coast - a sign that as quickly as ANIMALS AS LEADERS have risen, the best is yet to come.
Born in Washington DC Javier Reyes has been playing extended range guitars for over ten years. He studied Latin American Folkloric music with a private instructor. For the past 3 years Reyes has played guitar in the instrumental progressive metal band Animals As Leaders. He spends much of his time immersed in music and has been working on a solo project Mestis that he both produced and mixed. Reyes is also a member of the rock jazz-fusion act T.R.A.M. releasing a top ten album on the jazz charts. He has been featured in press outlets such as; Alternative Press, GuitarWorld, Premier Guitar. Reyes is currently endorsed by mammoth companies such as; Ibanez & Ortega guitars, Mackie, DiMarizo, EMG, DR Strings, Dunlop and Fractal Audio. He plays an Ibanez custom RGA8 & RG8 uses Fractal Audio AxeFX II, and Voodoo Labs Ground Control.
Inspired by his father Greg Garstka (a professional guitar player) Matt Garstka began playing drums at age 8. At age 11 matt started gigging with his father playing rock, blues and reggae. By age 14 Matt was playing in Rock, Fusion,Funk, Punk, Latin, Jazz, and Reggae groups. Playing most often with seasoned musicians Matt quickly developed into a versatile, and mature musician. At age 14 Matt had the chance to meet Jo Sallins who inspired him to become a professional world class musician. He worked tirelessly at his craft, and studying all styles of music with the help of Jo Sallins and Greg Garstka. He soon began doing studio work, and started teaching privately. Matt toured several times with Gokh Bi System, an African Hip Hop band several times during his studies at Berklee. Matt graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2011. He moved to L.A. shortly after in search of his musical dream. Soon after moving to L.A. he linked up and joined the band Animals as Leaders.
Special Guest Instructor, Evan Brewer
With a diverse and unique pallet of influences, brilliant technical prowess and an unconventional approach to music, Evan is set to reinvent the bass guitar in the minds of a new generation of music fans. Evan's talent for playing the bass presented itself at an early age. While still in high school in Nashville, TN Brewer took to the bass naturally, attracting the attention of legendary virtuoso Reggie Wooten. What began as a mentor-student relationship blossomed over time into a friendship as Wooten's lessons on technique and musical philosophy had a profound effect on Evan's early musical development.
As fate would have it, Evan Brewer later teamed up with a DC-area band called Reflux featuring Ash Avildsen, who would go on to found Sumerian Records, and Tosin Abasi, now of Animals As Leaders. When Reflux split, Evan became a permanent member of the metal band Animosity which included Navene Koperweis, coincidentally also now a member of Animals As Leaders. Evan Brewer also filled in with other noteworthy metal and hardcore bands on tour including A Life Once Lost and Terror.
As a bass player, Evan can't be pinned to any particular style. Whether he is sitting-in playing funk, jazz, and soul with the Wooten Brothers or contributing to the tech-metal assault of a band like The Faceless, Brewer's signature sound and unmatched versatility are on display. In fact, another mysterious and yet-to-be-released project called Climaxes even features Evan Brewer as a multi-instrumentalist and producer.
While viral videos of Evan playing bass have already captured the hearts and minds of music fans all over the world, his solo bass record -ALONE- will shock listeners not only with its virtuosic playing but also its amazing listen-ability; these songs are not just shallow demonstrations of his factual capability on the instrument, but they are actually enjoyable, often haunting tunes with serious emotional and artistic merit. The album was produced and performed by Evan Brewer alone and features only bass guitar on every track, a truly unique accomplishment for such a compelling release.
